Boutique Hotel Courtyard & Pool Garden, Sharjah
A tired hotel courtyard rebuilt as a formal garden around a restored reflecting pool, with a natural show lawn, a 620 m² artificial event lawn and layered lighting, phased so the pool never closed.
The Challenge
A 120-key boutique hotel in Sharjah was losing its outdoor business. The central courtyard and pool garden had tired planting, a cracked reflecting pool and a lawn that turned to dust every summer under heavy footfall from weddings and weekend brunches. Guest reviews mentioned the garden, and not kindly. The operator wanted a formal, photogenic garden that could host 200-guest events, stay immaculate year-round and be maintained by a small in-house team, all without closing the hotel during the work.
Working inside an operating hotel set the rules. No noisy works before 10 am, no dust near the restaurant terrace, and the pool had to reopen every weekend. Sharjah's summer humidity and the courtyard's enclosed microclimate pushed surface temperatures well past 45°C and encouraged fungal disease in the old lawn. The client also needed a clear answer to a hard question: natural grass or artificial, and where. We phased the work across fourteen weeks so that part of the garden was always open to guests.
Our Solution
We redesigned the courtyard as a formal garden with a clear axis: a restored reflecting pool at the centre, clipped hedging and palm avenues either side, and an event lawn at the far end. The answer to the grass question was both. The show lawn beside the reflecting pool is natural paspalum, maintained on a scheduled programme. The high-traffic event lawn and pool surround use premium artificial grass that looks natural in photographs and never turns to dust.
- Formal layout with a 22 m reflecting pool, re-waterproofed and lined in dark granite so the façade and palms mirror in it.
- Avenues of 24 transplanted date palms and clipped ficus and clusia hedging to give instant structure and shade along the walkways.
- 620 m² of 40 mm premium artificial grass with a shock pad and drainage base on the event lawn and pool surround, rated for heavy footfall.
- Natural paspalum show lawn with a weekly lawn-care programme: mowing, aeration, top dressing, fertilising and seasonal disease control.
- Layered 3000K LED lighting: palm uplighters, hedge washers and reflecting-pool edge lights on timed event and late-night scenes.
- Work phased in four stages around the hotel's event calendar, with the pool open every weekend throughout.
The Result
The garden reopened fully after fourteen weeks without a single lost weekend of pool trading. Outdoor event bookings rose 35% in the first year, and the hotel's garden now appears in its own marketing photography. The artificial event lawn has hosted more than 60 weddings and brunches without repair, and the in-house team maintains the whole scheme on an eight-hour weekly plan with our quarterly support visits.
