Beachfront Villa Landscape, Palm Jumeirah
Salt spray, sea wind and sandy soil met a mature scheme of restored date palms, a carved terrace fountain and a relit beach-side pool deck, delivered in nine weeks on one of Dubai's most exposed plots.
The Challenge
A frond villa on Palm Jumeirah with direct beach access, bought by a family relocating from London. The garden had been neglected for two seasons. Twelve mature date palms were overgrown, crowned with dead fronds and hiding scale insects; the lawn had been burnt off by salt spray and sea wind; and the irrigation ran on a single timer that either drowned the beds or left them dry. The owners wanted a lush, established-looking garden in time for a December housewarming, not a new scheme that would take three years to fill in.
Palm Jumeirah is one of the hardest places in the UAE to keep a garden green. Soil salinity tested at over 6 dS/m in the seaward beds, the afternoon shamal wind shreds soft foliage, and anything planted too close to the boundary is caught by salt-laden spray. Access was tight: every pallet of stone and every palm came down a single shared frond road with strict delivery hours. The solution had to be salt-tolerant, wind-tough and installed with minimal disruption to neighbours.
Our Solution
We kept every mature palm and built the garden around them. Our arborist team crown-cleaned, treated and fertilised the twelve date palms, then added four more semi-mature specimens for instant structure. Seaward beds were replanted with a salt-tolerant palette of agave, sea lavender, clusia and bougainvillea over sheet-mulched, leached soil. A carved stone fountain now anchors the terrace, and the pool deck was relit for evening entertaining. Irrigation was rebuilt from scratch.
- Full palm care programme: crown cleaning, removal of 140+ dead fronds, scale treatment, trunk tidy and slow-release palm fertiliser for all sixteen date palms.
- Soil remediation in the seaward beds: gypsum application, deep leaching and 30 cm of imported sweet soil blended with organic compost.
- Salt- and wind-tolerant planting: agave, clusia hedging as a living windbreak, sea lavender, bougainvillea and desert rose, with frangipani in the sheltered courtyard.
- Hand-carved natural stone tiered fountain on the terrace with a recirculating pump and built-in underwater LED lighting.
- Six-zone smart irrigation using pressure-compensating drip, a rain and wind sensor and a flow meter that alerts the owner to leaks.
- Pool deck relit with warm 3000K LED step lights, palm uplighters and recessed deck markers on a dusk-to-midnight schedule.
The Result
The garden was ready nine weeks after we started, a fortnight before the housewarming. All sixteen palms are now healthy and fruiting, the seaward beds have held through two summers of salt spray, and the flow-metered irrigation uses 38% less water than the old timer system. The owners describe the terrace fountain as the sound they hear when they come home.
