Natural Rock Waterfall Garden, Al Ain
A 4.5-metre natural rock waterfall and planted stream bring the sound of Jebel Hafeet's wadis into a private Al Ain garden, built from locally quarried stone and lit for the evening.
The Challenge
The owners of a family villa in Al Jimi wanted something rarely attempted in a private UAE garden: a natural waterfall that looked as though it had always been there, not a tiled feature with a visible pump. The plot sloped nearly two metres toward the house, and Al Ain's dry inland heat meant evaporation and algae had to be designed out from the start. They also wanted the garden to be the view from every majlis window.
Our Solution
We used the slope instead of fighting it. Over 40 tonnes of locally quarried Hafeet stone were set by hand into a 4.5-metre cascade that drops through three pools into a planted stream running toward the house. The pump chamber and filtration are hidden beneath a stone shelf, with a UV clarifier and auto top-up valve keeping the water clear in 45Β°C heat. Planting softens every edge, and lighting turns the waterfall into the evening focal point.

- Variable-speed pump, UV clarifier and biological filtration sized for Al Ain's heat, with an automatic top-up valve to offset evaporation.
- Naturalistic planting of papyrus, canna, dwarf date palm, bougainvillea and ornamental grasses, with ghaf and sidr trees for shade.
- Warm 3000K submersible and rock-mounted LED lights on two scenes, plus low-level path lighting to the majlis terrace.
The Result
Eight weeks after breaking ground, the waterfall was running and the garden was planted. The water has stayed clear through two summers with a single weekly filter check, and the sealed, recirculating system loses only what evaporates, about 150 litres a day in August. The family now hosts in the garden most weekends, and the view from the majlis is exactly the one they asked for.
