The recommended service schedule
Monthly: a 15-minute walk-through
Run each zone for two minutes and look. Look for emitters that do not drip, heads that are stuck or misting, wet patches that suggest a leak, and plants that look thirsty while their neighbours look fine. Clean the filter screen and confirm the controller shows the right time and programme.
Quarterly: a professional service
Every three months a technician should flush the lines, clean or replace filters, test zone pressure, clear clogged emitters, re-aim or replace nozzles and re-balance the schedule for the season. For a villa this takes one to two hours.
April to May: the pre-summer deep service
This is the one you must not skip. Before the heat peaks, the system should be pressure-tested end to end, emitters replaced where calcium has taken hold, the pump and solenoid valves inspected, and the controller moved to summer run times. A system that enters June in good shape rarely fails in August.
October: the post-summer reset
Once temperatures fall, cut watering minutes back by 40β50%, check for UV-damaged tubing and repair any fittings that shifted in the heat. Also re-position emitters for shrubs and trees that outgrew them over the season.
What a full irrigation service includes
- Flushing mains and laterals to clear sand and sediment.
- Cleaning disc or screen filters and replacing worn cartridges.
- Testing static and working pressure at each zone (most drip runs best at 1.5β2.5 bar).
- Inspecting and clearing drip emitters blocked by calcium scale from hard water.
- Checking sprinkler heads for alignment, rotation and coverage overlap.
- Locating and repairing leaks, split tubing and loose fittings.
- Re-programming the controller for the season and testing every valve.

How many minutes should you be watering?
Every garden is different, but as a starting point: in peak summer, lawns need 10β15 minutes per spray zone daily, split into an early-morning and late-evening cycle, and drip zones for shrubs need 30β45 minutes every one to two days. From November to February, cut lawn zones to 6β8 minutes three or four times a week and drip zones to 20β30 minutes twice a week. Always water before sunrise, and pause after rain.

Monthly checks are well within reach of any homeowner.
